CaniCross
What is it?
CaniCross is a form of cross country running with you and your dog where you are both connected with the dog running out front. It is closely linked to the other CaniSports of CaniBike, CaniShoot and CanRig having its origins in sled dog training with mushers training lead dogs during periods of no show and since has become a recreational and sporting activity of its own. Events will sometimes have races just for CaniCross and others will have multiple races for all types of CaniSports.
How does it work?
Dog and handler are connected via a pulling harness on the dog, a belt on the owner and a bungee lead between the two. The dog is encouraged to pull into the harness out in front of the owner while the owner gives the dog directions through commands to keep them on course.
How to get started?
Your dog will need to be fully grown and over the age of 1 to start CaniCross training due to the longer periods of running and pulling. You will need to get a suitable harness that allows for safe pullin, and a belt and bungee for you. There are various clubs and classes you can join to learn how to train you and your dog to run as a team and safely as well as online guides and shops selling the proper equipment. You would generally start out slowly with a shorter, easier run and then build up to a longer run.
